“The formative years of the Cashmere Veterinary Clinic”

Sheryl and Mick McDevitt purchased a small residence at 401 North Division Street (now renamed Aplets Way) in 1977 and remodeled the building to serve as the Cashmere Veterinary Clinic.

The clinic opened its doors on July 1, 1978. The office hours were 8am to 5:30pm Monday through Friday and 8am to noon on Saturdays. We handled all emergencies.

Our first patient was a female cat needing vaccinations. Our office call/exam fee was $7.00.

We lived in the clinic building for one year during which time we had two personal rooms – a bedroom and a kitchen/dining room.

Our first employee, Marion Moore, was hired in 1980.

We remodeled and expanded the 401 building in 1989.

The practice served large and small pets, wildlife; and provided cremation services. In 1990 we stopped working on large animals and discontinued cremation services in 2003.

On June 30, 2006, we purchased the recently closed Braun Funeral Home building at 227 Cottage Avenue and totally remodeled it into a veterinary clinic that opened on Halloween 2007.

We increased our staff to two employees in 2007.

On June 30, 2015, after performing over fifty-thousand examinations and neutering over seven-thousand pets we put down our stethoscopes and closed the doors. Our final patient was a cat with hemorrhagic cystitis.

We sold the Cashmere Veterinary Clinic to Megan Kelley on April 25, 2018.

This is true for our staff as well. All people have injured themselves, body, and soul. Employment at the Cashmere Veterinary Clinic requires self-sacrifice in exchange for redemption. What does accreditation mean?

The American Animal Hospital Association is the only organization to accredit companion animal veterinary hospitals in the US and Canada. Human hospitals undergo similar mandatory accreditation, however, it is completely voluntary for veterinary hospitals to pursue AAHA accreditation. Only 12-15% of veterinary hospitals in the United States and Canada are accredited by AAHA.

Earning the AAHA accreditation means that Cashmere Veterinary Clinic holds itself to a higher standard and that your pet is receiving care at a hospital that has passed the highest standards in veterinary care.

Accreditation by AAHA is the only way to know a veterinary practice is operating at the highest standards of excellence in animal care. Pet owners gain peace of mind when they choose an accredited practice because they know their AAHA-accredited hospital has passed the highest standards of veterinary care.

What requirements must an AAHA Accredited hospital meet?

AAHA sends consultants to AAHA-accredited veterinary hospitals periodically for on-site evaluations of the hospital’s adherence to the AAHA Standards of Accreditation. AAHA consultants evaluate hospitals on approximately 900 different standards of veterinary care. Areas that are evaluated include patient care and pain management, surgery, pharmacy, laboratory, exam facilities, medical records, cleanliness, emergency services, dental care, diagnostic imaging, anesthesiology, and continuing education.

How does AAHA Accreditation affect me and my pet?

Because AAHA accreditation is completely voluntary, you can be certain that hospitals that take the time and effort to become certified truly value you and your pet.

These hospitals strive for the highest quality of care possible. Because veterinarians and staff at AAHA accredited hospitals must also meet specific levels of continuing education, you can be sure that your veterinary team is on the cutting edge of animal health.

Likewise, AAHA practices provide immediate diagnostic capabilities and have an onsite pharmacy as well. AAHA standards also reach beyond patient care and medical standards to include excellent customer service. megan m. kelley

Dr. Megan Kelley was raised in Cashmere, where she learned to swim in the Cashmere pool and went to Vale Elementary. Growing up in Cashmere and the surrounding areas instilled in Megan an appreciation and respect for the outdoors, a passion for the arts, and a deep love for animals that evolved into a career in veterinary medicine.

Dr. Kelley knew she wanted to be a veterinarian at a young age, which fueled her desire to excel and persevere. As one of the first Running Start students in the Wenatchee Valley, she graduated with her Associates of Science from Wenatchee Valley College at the time of her high school graduation. Megan went on to graduate from Washington State University in 2001, majoring in Zoology with an emphasis in Veterinary Medicine, was the youngest college graduate to start the Veterinary Medicine Program at WSU in 2001, and graduated from WSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005.

Dr. Kelley has enjoyed a varied and distinguished professional career. She has worked in Wenatchee, both at Countryside Small Animal Veterinary Clinic and at the Animal Hospital of Wenatchee, and has also worked in specialty veterinary clinics in both Florida and Washington State as an emergency clinician for over 10 years. During her time in general practice, Dr. Kelley has learned to successfully integrate the use of both Holistic Medical Treatments (such as acupuncture and herbal therapy) with Conventional Medicine, in order to provide the highest level of care to her patients. Throughout her extensive career, Dr. Kelley has found the use of integrative medicine to be the most natural and effective way to care for animals in both theory and practice.

Dr. Kelley was certified in veterinary acupuncture in 2011 through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS), and in 2017, she became certified in veterinary spinal manipulation therapy (CVSMT), also known as veterinary chiropractics.

An involved community member, Dr. Kelley is a part of the cello section in the Wenatchee Valley Symphony, writes a monthly column for the Wenatchee World, and is a proud member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (AHVMA), the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS), the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture (AAVA), is a Fellow of the College of Animal Chiropractors, and Wenatchee Valley Humane Society’s 2019 Humanitarian of the Year.

Bailey has been on our team from the very beginning! Not only is she a joy to work with, she is confident and capable and has mastered the positions of Veterinary Assistant and Client Care Coordinator. She is now our Practice Manager and is the glue that helps hold all of the day-to-day tasks and inventory together. She is key to managing the details that help keep our business operations running smoothly. She manages our online Vet Store as well as various rehab services for our clients. It helps that she has a ready smile and easy-going nature!

She spent her younger years traveling with her family between California and Washington. She was glad when they decided to stay in the Wenatchee Valley, where she received her education. She has always loved studying science and apparently started bringing stray cats home in her early teens! She loves the outdoors and feels blessed to live is such a beautiful environment.

What she says about being on our team: I am so grateful to have this opportunity to grow and advance in my career here at the Cashmere Veterinary Clinic. We are a family, we work hard, laugh, cry and sometimes challenge each other, but we grow together. Dr. Kelley appreciates us, supports us, and helps us trust each other.

Chelsea goes by CJ here at our clinic! She joined our team in January of 2022 and has grown into a newer position that we needed as we continue to expand our clinic. She helps both Dr. Kelley and our Practice Manager Bailey keep up with important daily tasks.

She graduated from Cashmere High School and now resides here with her husband and two kids. CJ is an avid indoor/outdoor plant collector and loves being outside and hiking all around the PNW.

Fun fact: CJ can ride a unicycle!

What she says about being on our team: My childhood dream was to become a veterinarian as my love for animals has run deep ever since I could remember. However, my life path took me in another direction and finding myself working at a Veterinary Clinic is so awesome and getting to see the ins and outs of the clinic fulfills that childhood dream. I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to work with such awesome people!

Lynett is well-known in the Cashmere Community and is one of our indispensable team members. We have relied on her skills as a Veterinarian Technician since the day we opened our doors. She is warm and friendly, knows almost everyone who walks in the door, and can calm even the most “grumpy” – humans and animals alike!

Lynett was born and raised in Cashmere. She graduated from Cashmere High School, then went to Washington State University where she graduated with a BS in Animal Science. She spent some time living and working in the Seattle area, where she gained valuable experience and knowledge in the area of pharmaceutical research. We are happy to say that she has come back to the mountains where she lives on 20 acres at the end of a canyon, with a menagerie of adorable dogs, and various wild things that live in the woods! She is working on creating a safe, beautiful and sustainable homestead in the woods where she grew up.

She is yet another team member who has loved animals from day one! Comfortable with lashed dragons, feral cats, gerbils, fish, spiders, horses, pigs, dogs… yes, the list could go on forever!

What she says about being on our team: This an amazing, fun and energetic team with great communication. Thanks to Dr. Kelley, we are able to offer specialized treatments that are innovative and exciting! I’m looking forward to working with the new equipment and positive reinforcement training in our new rehab center!

Nikki ramirez

Nikki joined our team in June of 2021 as one of our valued Veterinary Assistants. She is super capable and brings skill and knowledge with her to work every day.

Nikki grew up in Cashmere, graduated from Cascade Christian Academy and got her teaching credentials at Walla Walla University. She is passionate about learning and is ready to jump in wherever needed. She is
interested in continuing her education in the field of Veterinary Science. Her experience as an elementary teacher gives her the patience and understanding that will help her succeed!

As most everyone on our team, animals have always been a part of Nikki’s life. Nikki is not only a wife, a mom and a natural born teacher, she is a country girl at heart, at home on a horse, or a tractor, with a down to earth, can do attitude and a heart of gold!

What she says about being on our team: The team here is a very united group. Dr. Kelley is a wonderful leader. It is a great environment for learning, and we have a lot of fun in the process!

Candi comes to her Veterinary Assistant position having been in the field for several years. She is no stranger to the workings of a Vet Clinic, having been in a variety of positions in her former employment. She brings an array of skills to her position and is eager to learn!

Candi grew up on a farm in Maple Valley and loves animals. She moved to Colville for high school and college. Every job she has ever had has been centered around caring for animals. Candi sees herself a “helper”, someone who loves to be given a task, then sees it through to completion with proficiency and pride.

Here is a little-known fact – Candi is a graduate of the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute! You may even get her to give you a few tips on keeping your “Hog” healthy!

What she says about being a member of our team: I love being part of this fun team! Everyone has such a positive attitude! I’m excited to be part of the natural, holistic approach to animal care. It is clear that Dr. Kelley offers expertise and treatments that are not found in other clinics. She values relationships and spends quality time with our clients.

Gabbie joined our team in the spring of 2021 as one of our valued Veterinary Assistants. She is a pleasure to work with and brings skill and knowledge to our team. She has a special ability to connect to animals helping them feel safe and cared for.

Gabbie grew up in Wenatchee. In high school her favorite classes were Biology and Science. She is currently attending Wenatchee Valley College and hopes to attend Washington State University to pursue a degree in Veterinary Medicine.

She bonded with animals at a very early age and has a special love for exotic animals. Her goal is to be able to someday travel the world working with animals of every sort!

What she says about being on our team: I love to be with all of these amazing animals and getting to bond with them. I also love working with the amazing staff who are very welcoming!

Sarah joined our team in May of 2022 in the role of Veterinary Assistant. She is enthusiastic and eager to learn. She has been studying hard and is comfortable in her role.

She came to us by way of Upstate New York and North Carolina! She grew up with horses, dogs and cats and has always wanted to work with animals. She now lives in Peshastin with her two cats, Theo and Luna. Her Theo kitty even knows how to sit on command! Sarah loves to be outdoors, so you may run into her on the trail, climbing the pinnacles or snowboarding in the mountains on her days off!

What she says about being on our team: Everyone cares deeply for our clients and their animals. The team is close, everyone is helpful and welcoming. Every day is a learning experience, I feel at home here.

Alyvia has been with us since November 2021 as aVeterinary Assistant. She was born and raised in Cashmere and graduated from Cashmere High School. She is sincere, and brings genuine care and concern to our clients and their cherished pets.

Alyvia has 4 cats, 2 dogs and a horse! Her cat Milo can open the cat treat container that has a lid!! She come from a large family and is good at being flexible and helpful. She loves to bake and share her delicious goodies with family and staff!

What she says about being on our team: Everyone is open and honest here. I love that everyone comes together to focus on the best care for our clients and their pets. I learn something new every day!

Maddie joined our team in January of 2022 as our Client Care Coordinator.
She is passionate about keeping clients informed and updated, whether in
person, on the phone, email or text! She keeps our clients at the center of our practice, making sure they know how much we care.

Maddie moved to the Wenatchee Valley from California. Even though she misses her family back in CA, she feels she has been blessed to find a place here with our Cashmere Vet Clinic Team! She admits she was apprehensive at first, not knowing if she could “handle” being strong in order to support owners and their beloved pets when times were difficult or sad. But she has found it has made her a more compassionate person who is stronger than she thought.

What she says about being on our team: I believe I have found my “village”. The people here are like a family. I hear often from our clients that Dr. Kelley and the rest of the team have created a veterinary practice that is unique and special! I couldn’t agree more!!

Liz joined our team in May of 2022. She was born and raised in Cashmere. She graduated from Cashmere High School and
attended various classes at Wenatchee Valley College. Liz is the “Voice” of The Cashmere Vet Clinic! She is most often the first voice you hear when you call, or the first person you meet when you come into the office. She is friendly, calm and capable!

Liz has always loved animals. Currently, she and her sister have two dogs and a cat, and are part of a large extended family that enjoy being together. She is applying what she is learning here at the Vet Clinic to her own experiences as a pet owner.

What she says about being on our team: Dr. Kelley and all of the others on this team are dedicated and love what they do! I believe we are working with and learning from the best!

Anell joined our team in May of 2022. She loves the field
of Veterinary Medicine and is happy to be learning the workings of the clinic from the ground up! She brings a genuine willingness to learn even the most basic tasks, from making sure the clinic is clean to greeting clients and assisting in the care of animals. She has a great
attitude and happy to take on new tasks.

Family is very important to her. You might find her out walking her dogs on the weekends, or being with her large extended family enjoying time together.

What she says about being on our team: I look forward to coming to work every day! Learning from such great teachers and mentors helps give me confidence as I learn! It’s like a close family, everyone is cooperative and willing to help.
