In-House Digital Cytology

Safe, minimally invasive way to get important answers quickly — without the need for surgery.

Cytology is the study of cells under a microscope. At our clinic, we use a HeskaView Digital Cytology machine, which allows us to prepare samples in-house and send digital images directly to a specialist for review.

We may recommend cytology for:
  • Lumps or masses
  • Skin and ear infections
  • Body fluids (such as joint, abdominal, or chest fluid)
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
Samples are usually collected with a fine needle, swab, or fluid draw. The process is quick, safe, and usually doesn’t require sedation.
What is Cytology?

Why Cytology Matters

Cytology helps us:

  • Determine if a lump is benign or may need further testing
  • Identify infections, inflammation, or allergic conditions
  • Detect abnormal or cancerous cells early

Faster Results, Expert Review

With the HeskaView system, we can prepare a sample in-clinic and then send high-quality digital images directly to a board-certified veterinary pathologist. This means:

Testing in-clinic allows for faster turnaround than sending samples out.
A veterinary pathologist reviews the cells and provides a detailed report.
Results help us decide if surgery, medication, or monitoring is the best next step.
  • Less waiting and worry for you and your pet
  • Early answers that can lead to faster treatment
  • Access to specialist-level diagnostics without needing to travel
